NBA Capsules (January 25, 2017)

TORONTO (AP) LaMarcus Aldridge scored 21 points, Patty Mills added 18 off the bench and the San Antonio Spurs beat the Toronto Raptors 108-106 on Tuesday night for their fifth straight victory.

Without Kawhi Leonard, Tony Parker and Pau Gasol, the Spurs completed a season sweep of the Raptors following a 110-82 home victory earlier this month.

Kyle Lowry had 30 points and reserve Terrence Ross added 21 for the Raptors, who have lost four in a row for the first time since March 4-10, 2015.

76ERS 121, CLIPPERS 110

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Nerlens Noel scored 19 points, Richaun Holmes had 18 and Philadelphia beat Los Angeles.

Here was a twist ending not even M. Night Shyamalan could have scripted from his courtside seat: The Sixers played without injured center Joel Embiid and still beat Blake Griffin and the 30-win Clippers for their biggest victory of the season.

The Sixers rallied from 19 points down and proved yet again they are now a team trying to win games instead of tank seasons.

Embiid, out with a left knee contusion, waved his arms from the bench as the crowd shouted ”Trust the Process” in the waning minutes of the victory.

Griffin scored 12 points on 3-of-11 shooting in his first game since Dec. 18.

WIZARDS 123, CELTICS 108

WASHINGTON (AP) – Bradley Beal scored 13 of his 31 points in the fourth quarter and Washington extended its home winning streak to 14 games with a victory over Boston.

John Wall added 27 points, and Markieff Morris had 19 points and 11 rebounds as the Wizards never trailed while scoring their most points this season.

It came in a game they openly labeled a grudge match, even arriving at the Verizon Center in funeral-themed black clothing.

Isaiah Thomas scored 25 points and had 13 assists, but shot 1 of 7 in the fourth quarter in Boston’s third straight loss.

BULLS 100, MAGIC 92

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) – Dwyane Wade scored 21 points, Jimmy Butler added 20 and Chicago beat Orlando for its second straight victory.

Facing an Orlando team that was missing three of its four top guards, Wade and Butler took full advantage with drives to the basket and pull-up jumpers as the Bulls pulled away in the fourth quarter.

The turnover-prone Magic simply could not keep pace with a Bulls team that is going through point guard issues of its own with the surprising benching of Michael Carter-Williams.

Nikola Vucevic had 20 points for the Magic, who have dropped two straight and 11 of their last 14 games.

TIMBERWOLVES 112, SUNS 111

PHOENIX (AP) – Andrew Wiggins sank an 18-foot pull-up jumper at the buzzer to give Minnesota a victory over Phoenix.

Wiggins, who scored 31 points, made one of two free throws with 12.1 seconds remaining to put the Timberwolves ahead. P.J. Tucker sank two from the foul line to give Phoenix a 111-110 lead with 6.3 seconds left, just enough time for Wiggins’ game-winner.

Devin Booker overcame a slow start to make 5 of 6 shots in the fourth quarter, three of them 3-pointers, for 26 points for the Suns.

Tyson Chandler had a season-high 22 points and grabbed 17 rebounds for Phoenix. Eric Bledsoe added 18 points, including a three-point play that tied it at 109 with 1:05 remaining.

NUGGETS 103, JAZZ 93

DENVER (AP) – Nikola Jokic had 23 points and 11 rebounds, Jameer Nelson scored seven of his 17 points in the last four minutes and Denver held on to beat Utah.

The Nuggets led by 17 with a minute left in the third quarter before the Jazz made their push. Rudy Gobert scored eight of his 11 in the fourth and Boris Diaw’s reverse layup cut the lead to 92-88 with 2:49 remaining.

But Denver countered with an 8-0 run and Nelson’s 3-pointer pushed the lead back to 100-88 with 1:17 remaining. The Nuggets held on from there for their fifth win in seven games.

Darrell Arthur added 16 points off the bench.

Derrick Favors scored 18, George Hill had 17 and Diaw added 16 for Utah.

The Heat wasted a 10-point lead in the final 4 minutes, and Kevin Durant tied the game on a dunk with 11.7 seconds left. With no timeouts, Waiters walked the ball up the court and drilled what became the game-winner over Klay Thompson.

Golden State star Stephen Curry missed a corner jumper as time expired, though referee Brian Forte signaled his attempt was a two-point try anyway.

Goran Dragic scored 19 points for Miami (15-30), which finished a 4-0 homestand. Luke Babbitt added 11, and Hassan Whiteside had 10 points and 15 rebounds.

Jrue Holiday added 33 points and 10 assists for the Pelicans, and Langston Galloway capped a 12-point night with a clean steal on LeBron James’ drive in the final minute, preventing the Cavs from erasing a deficit they had trimmed from 22 late in the first half to three with 1:32 left in the game.

Kyrie Irving scoring 35 of his 49 points in the second half, but the Cleveland fell to its fifth loss in seven games. James had 26 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds, and Kevin Love scored 22 points.

THUNDER 97, JAZZ 95

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – Russell Westbrook hit a pull-up jumper with 1.4 seconds left, helping Oklahoma City stop Utah’s six-game win streak.

Alec Burks missed the final shot for the Jazz as time expired.

Kent Bazemore led the Hawks with 25 points. Dennis Schroder had 21, and Dwight Howard added 16 points and 12 rebounds.

Crawford had made only 7 of 41 shots in his last four games.

The Clippers improved to 3-7 while playing without injured stars Blake Griffin and Chris Paul. Griffin, who had arthroscopic right knee surgery on Dec. 20, warmed up before the game and likely will return Tuesday night at Philadelphia.

Paul is expected to miss six to eight weeks after tearing a ligament in his left thumb on Jan 16.

WIZARDS 109, HORNETS 99

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – John Wall had 24 points and seven assists, Markieff Morris added 23 points and eight rebounds, and Washington earned its fifth win in six games.

Otto Porter Jr. was active all night with 14 points and 13 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season. Bradley Beal made four 3-pointers on his way to 18 points, helping the Wizards shoot 54 percent from the field while the Hornets struggled to stop the pick and roll.

Washington also held Charlotte to 39 percent shooting.

Kemba Walker had 21 points on 7-of-24 shooting and Marco Belinelli added 18 for Charlotte, which had won three in a row.

KNICKS 109, PACERS 103

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Carmelo Anthony scored 26 points and broke a tie with a baseline jumper with 23.4 seconds left, sending the Knicks to a rare victory at Indiana.

It was the Knicks’ first road win in the series since March 17, 2012. Derrick Rose had 20 points and six assists for New York, which had dropped four of five.

Indiana erased a 17-point third-quarter deficit and tied it at 103 on two free throws by Paul George with 42 seconds remaining. Anthony answered, and the Pacers didn’t score again.

SPURS 112, NETS 86

NEW YORK (AP) – Patty Mills scored 20 points, LaMarcus Aldridge had 16 and San Antonio rolled while playing without Kawhi Leonard and three other regulars.

Pau Gasol (broken bone, left hand) and Tony Parker (sore left foot) didn’t even make the road trip, while Manu Ginobili was scheduled for a night off but couldn’t have played anyway because of back spasms. Then Leonard, the Western Conference player of the week, was scratched.

The Spurs announced Leonard was resting, though coach Gregg Popovich said the All-Star forward had a sore left hand.

Isaiah Whitehead scored 19 points for the Nets, who got more bad news before the game when they announced Jeremy Lin will be sidelined another three to five weeks after aggravating his strained left hamstring.

KINGS 109, PISTONS 104

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) – DeMarcus Cousins had 22 points and 14 rebounds, and the Kings snapped a five-game losing streak.

A 3-pointer by Lawson put Sacramento up 101-90 in the fourth, and the Kings held on from there to stop Detroit’s three-game winning streak.

Nets PG Jeremy Lin re-aggrivates strained left hamstring

Brooklyn Nets PG Jeremy Lin re-aggravated his strained left hamstring during his rehab, and will be out for 3-5 weeks, the Nets announced on Monday.

"During the course of his rehab, Jeremy re-aggravated his strained left hamstring and will be out approximately three to five weeks as he continues to work towards a full recovery," Nets General Manager Sean Marks said in a statement. "We understand and appreciate Jeremy’s competitive desire to get back on the court with his teammates, however, we are going to be cautious with his rehab in order to ensure that he is at full strength once he returns.”

Lin is averaging 13.9 points, 3.2 rebounds and 5.8 assists in 12 games played in 2016-17 with the Nets.

All-Star party could be over for Carmelo, Wade

Dwyane Wade hasn’t had to often rely on Eastern Conference coaches. Carmelo Anthony never has.

Now the coaches could be the only way the two veterans participate in the All-Star Game.

Neither was voted a starter and both face tough odds to get picked as reserves this week for next month’s game in New Orleans.

Anthony had been elected a starter in all five full seasons with the Knicks, part of his eight starts among his nine All-Star appearances. But the fan support wasn’t there this season and he didn’t get any help from the media or fellow players in the first season they were included in the voting process.

He might get some from coaches, who still praise him as a dangerous scorer at 32 years old.

”I would love to be a part of that weekend, represent not only the Knicks but represent New York as a city down there in New Orleans,” Anthony said. ”So if I have the honor to do that I’d accept that with open arms, but we’ll see what happens.”

Reserves will be revealed Thursday after voting by head coaches in each conference, who will select three frontcourt players, two guards and two players regardless of position.

Wade has been a starter 10 times in his 12 All-Star appearances, and both numbers would have increased this year in the old voting format. He finished second among guards in fan voting but only sixth among media and players. Now he’s in the guard mix with Boston’s Isaiah Thomas, Toronto’s Kyle Lowry, Washington’s John Wall and Charlotte’s Kemba Walker.

”He got my vote. I will tell you that,” Jimmy Butler told reporters of his Bulls teammate.

Now Wade needs some from coaches.

MILD, MILD WEST

Alvin Gentry, like many people, thought the Pelicans’ playoff hopes were over before they really started.

After all, teams don’t usually climb out of 0-8 holes in the Western Conference.

But neither the Pelicans nor anyone else is out of it this season in a horrible year at the bottom.

”I’ll be honest with you, in 28 years I’ve never seen it like this,” the New Orleans coach said.

Eight teams could be battling for the final spot, and it might not take much to get it.

In 2013-14, the Phoenix Suns went 48-34 and they couldn’t. Now 35 wins is on pace to get it done.

”Timing is everything I guess,” said Knicks coach Jeff Hornacek, who coached that Phoenix team.

Portland has surprisingly struggled after a second-round appearance last season, Dallas and New Orleans have battled injuries, and Minnesota, the Lakers and Phoenix might be too young.

That might leave Denver, which leads the race for eighth at 18-25.

But if one of those bunched at the bottom can get hot – or even just lukewarm – it might be playing in May.

”You think 1-8 you got to make up seven games to just get back to .500, but it’s just been kind of a strange year in that … the last six, seven spots in the West everybody has an opportunity still I think,” Gentry said. ”With a couple of win streaks and a couple of things you feel like you’re right there.”

COMING THIS WEEK:

SHINING STARS: Before heading to New Orleans for the All-Star Game, starters LeBron James, Kyrie Irving and Kawhi Leonard, plus likely reserves Russell Westbrook and John Wall visit the Big Easy this week as the Pelicans host Cleveland, Oklahoma City, San Antonio and Washington.

CURRY’S LONE HOMECOMING: With the All-Star Game moved from Charlotte to New Orleans, the Warriors’ game Wednesday in North Carolina will be Stephen Curry’s only chance to play at home this season.

GOING FOR 14: The Washington Wizards try for their 14th consecutive home victory on Tuesday against Boston, their lone game in the nation’s capital in a six-game span.

MVP VS. ROOKIE OF THE YEAR? Joel Embiid is the heavy favorite for the first-year award and James Harden a leading contender for the top individual award. Their teams play Friday when Houston visits Philadelphia.

STAT LINE OF THE WEEK: Kawhi Leonard, Spurs: 15 of 30, 41 points in 118-115 overtime victory over Cleveland. With the highest-scoring game of his career, Leonard became the first Spurs player with six straight 30-point games since Mike Mitchell in 1986.

CHICAGO (AP) – Dwyane Wade had 30 points and two key steals in the final minute, Jimmy Butler added 23 points and the Chicago Bulls overcame a 42-point performance by DeMarcus Cousins for a victory over the Sacramento Kings.

The game marked the first time Hill had played the Pacers since being traded from Indiana to Utah over the summer. The three-team deal with the Hawks sent Jeff Teague, who scored 19, from Atlanta to Indiana.

NBA Capsules (January 21, 2017)

HOUSTON (AP) Kevin Durant scored 32 points and the Golden State Warriors used a big third quarter to build a huge lead and coast to their sixth straight victory, 125-108 over the Houston Rockets on Friday night.

In a matchup of two of the best teams in the Western Conference and All-Star starting guards Stephen Curry and James Harden, the Rockets fell short. Houston, which entered the game leading the NBA with 667 3-pointers, was just 7 of 35 behind the arc. Harden went 0 for 5 and Eric Gordon, who entered the game leading the NBA with 160 3s, missed all seven attempts.

Clint Capela had 22 points and Harden added 17 points with 11 assists for the Rockets, who are third in the West behind Golden State and San Antonio.

Curry finished with 24 points and made five 3-pointers, including one with about 3 1/2 minutes remaining that left the Warriors up 117-93. Both teams cleared their benches after that.

HORNETS 113, RAPTORS 78

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – Kemba Walker scored 32 points on 11-of-16 shooting, and Charlotte beat Toronto.

Walker, who came in averaging 23 points and looking to earn his first All-Star selection, scored 16 points in the pivotal third quarter, including a four-point play as the Hornets outscored the Raptors 33-15 to build a 25-point lead.

Ersan Ilyasova scored 24 points and Joel Embiid added 18 points, 10 rebounds and five assists for the Sixers, who have won four straight and eight of their last 10.

Embiid, who sparked the recent surge, suffered a bruised left knee in the second half and didn’t play the final 8:50 of the game.

But the Sixers rallied for the victory without their prized center as Covington drilled the winner with 4.5 seconds left before Mason Plumlee missed a shot at the buzzer on the other end.

Damian Lillard scored 30 points for the Blazers, who have lost four straight.

HAWKS 102, BULLS 93

ATLANTA (AP) – Dennis Schroder scored 23 points, Paul Millsap added 14 and Atlanta held back a late scare to beat Chicago.

The Bulls put up little resistance all night until their reserves went on a 33-4 run in the fourth quarter to pull within five on Bobby Portis’ dunk with 1:08 remaining.

Chicago trailed by 22 at the end of the first, by 29 at the end of the second and 30 at the end of the third.

Atlanta’s lead was tenuous enough that Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer brought back Schroder and Millsap, who had rested the entire fourth quarter, for the last 2 minutes.

Dwight Howard and Thabo Sefolosha combined by 24 points for Atlanta, which has won 10 of 12.

Jimmy Butler finished with 19 points for the Bulls, who looked uninspired most of the night. They have dropped five of seven.

Randolph finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds for Memphis, which snapped a two-game losing streak. Tony Allen also had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Sacramento has lost seven of its last eight.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) – Elfrid Payton scored 20 points, Jeff Green added 18 points and seven rebounds off the bench, and Orlando snapped a three-game losing streak by beating Milwaukee.

The Magic, returning home from a 1-5 road trip, played with a small lineup for much of the night and it provided the offense they needed with two of their top scorers out. Orlando had six players in double figures, including starters Aaron Gordon (17), Serge Ibaka (13) and Nikola Vucevic (13).

Orlando shot 46 percent from the field while limiting the Bucks to 41 percent. Jabari Parker led Milwaukee with 25 points and Giannis Antetokounmpo contributed 17 points and 14 rebounds as the Bucks dropped their fourth straight game.

NETS 143, PELICANS 114

NEW ORLEANS (AP) – Brook Lopez and Bojan Bogdanovic scored 23 points apiece and Brooklyn ended an 11-game losing streak by routing New Orleans.

Caris Levert added 17 points on 6-of-6 shooting for the Nets, who had seven players in double figures while beating their season high for points by 16. Their 29-point victory was 11 more than their previous largest. They also set season highs for points in the second quarter (37) and points in any quarter with 43 in the third.

Anthony Davis led New Orleans with 22 points and nine rebounds despite leaving in the third quarter with a leg injury. The defeat was a huge comedown for him and the Pelicans a day after he was named a starter for the NBA All-Star Game in New Orleans.

JAZZ 112, MAVERICKS 107, OT

DALLAS (AP) – Rudy Gobert had career highs with 27 points and 25 rebounds, including one on his missed free throw in overtime that led to the tying 3-pointer by Joe Johnson, and Utah beat Dallas.

Gobert had just missed both of his free throw attempts with 1:50 left, but the second one ricocheted right back to him. Johnson then hit a 3 to make it 107-all.

After a Dallas miss by Deron Williams and a foul in the aftermath, Joe Ingles put the Jazz ahead to stay with two free throws with 1:35 remaining.

Gobert finished with his 29th consecutive 10-rebound game.

Gordon Hayward had 26 points, including a big 3-pointer late in regulation. Johnson finished with 15 points.

Harrison Barnes had 19 points for Dallas, which had seven players score in double figures. Williams had 16 points and Seth Curry 15.

LAKERS 108, PACERS 96

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Lou Williams scored 27 points, Nick Young hit five 3-pointers and Los Angeles snapped its five-game losing streak with a victory over Indiana.

Julius Randle scored 16 points while Young and rookie Brandon Ingram added 15 apiece as the Lakers made a prolonged second-half surge to win for just the sixth time in 27 games since November.

The Lakers even did it without D’Angelo Russell, who left after slipping on their second possession of the game, mildly spraining a ligament in his right knee and straining his right calf.

Paul George scored 21 points and Al Jefferson added 20 for the Pacers, who had a dismal second half in just their second loss in nine games.
