Bradley's Absence Felt as Celtics Fall in First Round

Game Recap from the Celtics website.

BOSTON – The Boston Celtics are not a team to make excuses.

That being said, it’s undeniable how much of an impact Avery Bradley’s absence was felt during Boston’s first-round playoff series against the Atlanta Hawks.

The Celtics lost their defensive rock/offensive kick-starter midway through the fourth quarter of Game 1. They struggled to find consistency on both ends of the court from that point forward, and ultimately met their demise Thursday night, dropping a penultimate Game 6, 104-92.

First and foremost, Boston missed Bradley’s lockdown perimeter defense.

Take, for instance, the impact he had on Atlanta guard Kyle Korver during Game 1. Bradley was able fight off screens and chase down the elite sharpshooter, limiting him to two points on 1-of-10 shooting from the field, including an 0-for-7 performance from 3-point range.

Following Bradley’s injury, Korver scored at least 10 points during each of the remaining five games, and shot 20-of-38 52.6 percent from the field, including 16-of-31 (51.6 percent) from long range.

As a competitor who’s shared plenty of battles with Bradley, Korver expressed disappointment that he was unable to face off against him during the majority of the series.

“Obviously his defense has always been great, so it’s unfortunate that he got hurt,” Korver said after Atlanta’s series-clinching win. “He’s a really good player and [his absence] definitely hurt them.”

But it wasn’t just Bradley’s defense that was missed; his scoring ability, which is often overlooked, was a key factor in Boston’s explosive offense during the regular season.

Bradley was often the player who set the tone and scored the first bucket of the game for Boston. He was the second-highest scorer on the team, and without him, Boston did not have many scoring options besides Isaiah Thomas.

“Everybody knows what a good defender he is, but I think he really has a positive impact on their offense,” said Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer. “All their rhythm, their flow, they do so many different things [when he’s on the court].”

One of those things is space the floor. Bradley stepped up his long-range game this season, making a career-high 147 3-pointers. That improvement earned the recognition of Korver, who sits eighth all-time in 3-point makes.

“It’s been incredible to watch his offense catch up to his defense,” said Krover. “When he has it going, I really look at him as a great shooter. He’s so quick on the dribble-handoffs and they run a lot of stuff for him, and he’s just really improved as a shooter.”

The Hawks had plenty to say about the impact of Bradley’s absence, knowing firsthand how much he affected their play. But as previously mentioned, the Celtics are not ones to make excuses themselves, and coach Brad Stevens is a profound proclaimer of that philosophy.

“Obviously Avery is a really good player and we’re thrilled he’s a Celtic, but we have other guys who can play too,” Stevens said as he took the podium for the final time this season. “That’s part of your season, that’s part of the way it goes and the next guys have got to [step] up.”

Those next guys put forth their best effort, but ultimately nothing could fill Bradley’s void.

“We missed him a lot,” said Jae Crowder. “We missed what he brings to the team and it sucks that happened, but injury is a part of it.

“He had one that he couldn’t fight through, and we just tried to step up for him, but at this time of the season you have a lot of guys hurt. His was just so unfortunate for us that it kept him out, and it hurt us.”

Being the competitor that he is, Bradley may have been the most frustrated Celtic during this first-round exit, given that he had to sit on the sideline and watch his team get eliminated from the postseason.

Bradley had said following Boston’s final preseason game in October that one of his main goals was to not miss a single game this season. He played most of them – 77 to be exact – and had an immense impact on the C’s success.

It was an impact that the Celtics certainly needed during this challenging series against the Hawks.

Hornets' Nicolas Batum to miss Game 4 against Heat with foot injury

"Pro Court Report" Staff Report

CHARLOTTE, NC - Charlotte Hornets small forward Nicolas Batum will miss his second straight game of the Hornets' first-round series against the Miami Heat with a left foot strain.

Batum injured his foot in the fourth quarter of Game 2 at Miami.

"That's just NBA basketball," Hornets head coach Steve Clifford said. "I think our guys are good. We've had more than our share of injuries all year and they've had the right attitude. In this league, you get up in the morning, you say, 'Who's good to play today?' and you play the best you can with that team.

"Obviously we proved we have more than enough to win. We'll have to play well. We wish we had him. But the biggest thing is to play well. We have to be locked in."

The Heat lead the series 2-1.

AP source: Byron Scott won't return to coach Lakers

LOS ANGELES (AP) Byron Scott will not return to coach the Los Angeles Lakers, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press on Sunday night.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team hadn't announced Scott's firing yet.

Scott coached the Lakers for the two worst seasons in the 16-time NBA champion franchise's history, going 38-126.

The Lakers finished with the NBA's second-worst record this season at 17-65, losing four more games than in their previous franchise-worst season in 2014-15.

Scott received praise from general manager Mitch Kupchak last week for his handling of the farewell season of Kobe Bryant, who was Scott's teammate during his rookie season with the Lakers 20 years ago. Bryant scored 60 points in his final game April 13, a win over Utah.

But the Lakers struggled to play competent defense or to put together coherent game plans over the past two seasons with a roster of youngsters and unimpressive veterans. Although the Lakers acknowledged that Bryant's season-long showcase took precedence over winning this season, Kupchak and owner Jim Buss still apparently expected more than Scott provided.

Scott had two seasons with team options left on his contract.

The Lakers are now looking for their fifth head coach since Phil Jackson left in 2011. Mike Brown and Mike D'Antoni were fired before Scott, with interim coach Bernie Bickerstaff also getting a short run.

Scott is a veteran head coach with previous tenures at New Jersey, New Orleans and Cleveland. He led the Nets to two NBA Finals in his first head job, and he won the NBA's Coach of the Year award with the Hornets in 2008.

Yahoo Sports first reported Scott's firing.

The Lakers waited to fire Scott while two top candidates for head coaching positions took other jobs. Tom Thibodeau landed in Minnesota, and Scott Brooks was hired by Washington.

The Lakers' new coach will inherit a young, patchwork roster with a core of intriguing talent. D'Angelo Russell, Julius Randle and Jordan Clarkson are all solid players, and the Lakers will keep their high draft pick if they finish in the top three of the NBA draft lottery next month.

ATLANTA (AP) The Hawks held Boston to the lowest-scoring first quarter in the playoffs since the NBA went to the shot clock, building a 21-point lead and holding on despite an ugly shooting performance of their own for an 89-72 victory Tuesday night, giving Atlanta a 2-0 lead in the opening-round series.

Sources: Jamal Crawford wins third Sixth Man of the Year award

"Pro Court Report" Staff Report

Los Angeles Clippers guard Jamal Crawford will be named the 2015-16 Sixth Man of the Year, according to multiple sources.

In 79 appearances this season, Crawford averaged 14.2 points and shot 90 percent from the free-throw line. He was a major reason Los Angeles sustained a high level of play when Blake Griffin was out with injuries.

This is the first time in NBA history that a player has been a recipient of the award three times.

Crawford, 36, will be an unrestricted free agent this summer.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) As Stephen Curry emphatically waved his arms to ignite the crowd and coached from the bench when he could do little else, Klay Thompson and theGolden State Warriors' supporting cast picked up the slack for their absent NBA MVP to hold off the Houston Rockets 115-106 on Monday night and take a 2-0 lead in their playoff series.

Thompson scored 34 points and dished out five assists for the defending champions, playing without Curry because of an injured right ankle. Curry cut short his pregame warmup routine after appearing to be in discomfort as he was shooting while putting little pressure on the tender ankle.

Andre Iguodala, last year's Finals MVP, added 18 points with four 3-pointers and Draymond Green had 12 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists.

Now, Curry has until Thursday's Game 3 in Houston to get healthy.

Brooklyn Nets Name Kenny Atkinson Head Coach

Statement from the Nets website.
Kenny Atkinson
Brooklyn, NY – The Brooklyn Nets have named Kenny Atkinson as the team’s new head coach.  Atkinson will become the 21st head coach in the franchise’s NBA history.  Per team policy, terms of the deal were not released.

“We are thrilled to announce Kenny Atkinson as our new head coach and to welcome him and his family to Brooklyn,” said Nets General Manager Sean Marks. “Kenny’s years of NBA coaching experience working under successful head coaches such as Mike Budenholzer and Mike D’Antoni have provided him with the foundation and experience we were looking for in a head coach. We believe that Kenny’s core principles, leadership, communication skills and exceptional background in player development make him an ideal fit for the culture we are building in Brooklyn.”

Atkinson currently serves as an assistant coach for the Atlanta Hawks and will continue in this capacity until the conclusion of Atlanta’s postseason.  With respect to the Hawks and their playoff schedule, a press conference to formally introduce Atkinson will be held on a date that has yet to be determined.

“I’d like to extend a personal welcome to Kenny and wish all of us success as we begin a new era at the Brooklyn Nets,” said Nets Owner Mikhail Prokhorov. “Aside from his tremendous skills and experience, he has the mindset we need to build a winning team day by day, step by step. Together, we can do great things.”

Atkinson joins the Nets after spending the past four seasons as an assistant coach with the Atlanta Hawks under Head Coach Mike Budenholzer. The Hawks made playoff appearances in each of Atkinson’s four seasons, including the club’s first-ever trip to the Eastern Conference Finals last season. The 2014-15 Hawks registered a franchise-record 60 wins, including a franchise-best 19-game win streak, and captured their first division title in more than 20 years. Atkinson served on the 2015 Eastern Conference All-Star coaching staff, and he guided Team World in the BBVA Compass Rising Stars Challenge during All-Star weekend in New York. Prior to his tenure with the Hawks, Atkinson was an assistant coach for four seasons with the New York Knicks (2008-12), helping the team reach the postseason in 2011 and 2012. Atkinson also spent one season as the Director of Player Development for the Houston Rockets (2007-08).

“I am truly honored and humbled to be named the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets, and I would like to thank Nets’ ownership and management for this tremendous opportunity,” said Atkinson.  “Together with Sean and his staff, we look forward to building a winning tradition here in Brooklyn.  I also want to acknowledge and thank Mike Budenholzer and the entire Atlanta Hawks organization for their cooperation and support throughout this process.  While I am eager to begin working with the Nets, I remain committed to my coaching responsibilities with the Hawks for the remainder of the postseason.”

A native of Huntington, New York, Atkinson has also held various coaching positions abroad, serving as Director of Player Development/Assistant Coach for Paris Basket Racing Club in France (2004-06), Director of Player Development/Assistant Coach for the national team of the Republic of Georgia in the summer of 2006 and as an assistant coach with the Ukraine national team at the European championships in 2011. Most recently, Atkinson was Head Coach of the Dominican Republic national team in last summer’s FIBA Americas Championship in Mexico City.

Prior to beginning his coaching career, Atkinson played professionally for 14 years (1990-2004), beginning his pro career in the CBA and USBL before competing for teams in France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands and Spain. A standout collegiate player at the University of Richmond, Atkinson earned All-CAA First Team honors as a junior and senior and helped lead the Spiders to a Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 1988. He was also selected as the 1987 CAA Rookie of the Year.

Atkinson and his wife, Laura, have a son, Anthony, and a daughter, Annika.

Stephen Curry questionable for Game 2 with ankle injury

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr called star guard Stephen Curry "questionable" for Game 2 of the team's playoff series against the Houston Rockets.

Curry rolled his ankle in Game 1 in Oakland, California on Saturday.

"As far as [Game 2 on] Monday, I'd say Steph is questionable," Kerr said. "We will see how he responds the next couple of days and go from there."

Curry, however, was optimistic that he would play in Game 2.

"Right now, don't see a scenario where I'll be out," Curry said at the postgame podium.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Stephen Curry dazzled from long range and drove to the hoop with fire and flair, scoring 24 points before tweaking his ankle as the Golden State Warriors beat the Houston Rockets 104-78 on Saturday in their playoff opener.

Draymond Green added 12 points and 10 rebounds as top-seeded Golden State carried momentum from setting the all-time wins record Wednesday night with No. 73 into a testy playoff opener some 60 hours later.

The Warriors topped the Michael Jordan-led Bulls of 1995-96, then immediately made one thing clear: That mark will mean nothing if they don't bring home back-to-back titles to the East Bay.

James Harden scored 17 points for cold-shooting Houston, held to six field goals in the first quarter of the rematch from last year's Western Conference finals, won by Golden State in five.

Game 2 in the best-of-seven series is Monday night at Oracle Arena, and Warriors coach Steve Kerr said Curry is questionable for that one. He will be re-evaluated Sunday.

PACERS 100, RAPTORS 90

TORONTO (AP) - Paul George scored 33 points, Monta Ellis had 15 and Indiana beatToronto in Game 1 of their first-round playoff series.

Jonas Valanciunas fouled out after scoring 12 points and setting a Raptors' playoff record with 19 rebounds.

All-Star guards Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan both struggled for the second-seeded Raptors. Lowry made 3 of 13 field goal attempts while DeRozan made 5 of 19. The pair went 1 for 10 from 3-point range and 8 for 15 at the free-throw line.

DeRozan finished with 14 points and Lowry had 11. Cory Joseph scored 18.

Toronto dropped to 0-8 in the first game of an opening-round playoff series.

THUNDER 108, MAVERICKS 70

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Russell Westbrook had 24 points and 11 assists, Kevin Durant added 23 points, and the Thunder opened the Western Conference series with their most dominant postseason performance since moving to Oklahoma City.

Serge Ibaka had 17 points and nine rebounds, and Enes Kanter added 16 points and 13 rebounds for the Thunder.

It was Oklahoma City's largest victory margin in a playoff game since moving from Seattle before the 2008-09 season, and the lowest point total the franchise has allowed in a postseason game, in Seattle or Oklahoma City.

Dallas scored its fewest points ever in a playoff game, and its .298 field-goal percentage was the worst ever in a postseason game for a franchise that has existed since 1980.

Dirk Nowitzki led the Mavericks with 18 points.

Game 2 will be Monday in Oklahoma City.

HAWKS 102, CELTICS 101

ATLANTA (AP) - Jeff Teague stymied another big Boston comeback, taking matters into his own hands in the closing minutes to lead Atlanta in Game 1 of the opening-round playoff series.

Teague scored 23 points and doled out 12 assists, making sure Atlanta maintained the home-court edge after the gritty Celtics rallied from a 19-point deficit.

With the game tied at 88, Teague worked the pick-and-roll to set up a layup for Al Horford. The Celtics missed and the Hawks again got the ball to Teague, who found Paul Millsap alone under the basket for a dunk that pushed Atlanta to a 92-88 lead with 2:56 remaining.

The Celtics had a chance to tie in the final minute, but Evan Turner missed an open 3-pointer.

Game 2 in the best-of-seven series is Tuesday night in Atlanta.

Ben McLemore had 24 points for the Kings, in what was likely coach George Karl's final game with the team amid reports that he could be fired as soon as Thursday. Karl went 44-68 since taking the job in February 2015, and this season is the 10th straight season in which the Kings did not make the playoffs.

SPURS 96, MAVERICKS 91

DALLAS (AP) - Rookies Boban Marjanovic and Jonathon Simmons set career scoring highs and San Antonio rallied past Dallas despite leaving home four starters and two key reserves.

The loss left the Mavericks at risk of falling to the No. 7 seed in the Western Conference and having to face the second-seeded Spursagain in the first round of the playoffs after San Antonio's 4-0 sweep of its Texas rival in the regular season.

Marjanovic, a 7-foot-3 Serbian center making his fourth start, had 22 points and matched a career high with 12 rebounds as the Spurs erased an 18-point halftime deficit in the third quarter and finished off the rally in the fourth. Simmons scored 19.

Kyle Anderson, a second-year player, matched his career best with 15 points, including eight in the fourth quarter. He had 10 rebounds for his first career double-double.

PISTONS 112, CAVALIERS 110, OT

CLEVELAND (AP) - LeBron James wore a black blazer and watched from the bench and all the starters for Cleveland and Detroit rested for their first-round playoff matchup as Jodie Meeks scored 20 to lead the Pistons past the Cavaliers.

James rushed onto the court to celebrate when Jordan McRae's 3-pointer tied it 103-all and forced OT. But Meeks, who played just 17 minutes all season because of a foot injury, scored four in the extra session. McRae scored 36 and had a chance to tie it in the final second, but missed two free throws after being fouled on a 3-pointer.

The teams will play Game 1 this weekend.

RAPTORS 103, NETS 96

NEW YORK (AP) - Rookie Norman Powell scored a career-high 30 points and Toronto wrapped up the best regular season in franchise history by beating Brooklyn.

With the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference already secured, the Raptors didn't even bring All-Star guards Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan, plus Jonas Valanciunas, James Johnson and DeMarre Carroll to the game. They won anyway, improving to 56-26 after coming into the season as the only NBA team that had never previously even won 50.

Powell added nine rebounds and five assists, while Terrence Ross had 24 points and 10 rebounds. Delon Wright scored 18 points. Bojan Bogdanovic scored 29 points for the Nets, who lost their final 10 games and finished 21-61.

CELTICS 98, HEAT 88

BOSTON (AP) - Isaiah Thomas had 21 points and Boston rallied from 26 points down to beat Miami.

Coupled with Atlanta's loss to Washington, Boston earned the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference. The Hawks' loss also gave Miami the third seed and its fifth Southeast Division title in six years. The Celtics will face the fourth-seeded Hawks in the first round. Miami will take on No. 6 seed Charlotte.

Avery Bradley added 17 points and seven rebounds. Evan Turner finished with 16 points for Boston.

Joe Johnson and Hassan Whiteside each had 19 points to lead the Heat. Goran Dragic added 18 points, and Dwyane Wade had 17.

WIZARDS 109, HAWKS 98

WASHINGTON (AP) - With a seemingly half-hearted showing in its final regular-season game, Atlanta lost to a bunch of backups for Washington and wound up with the No. 4 seed in the Eastern Conference.

After the game, a person familiar with the decision said Washington coach Randy Wittman has been told he will not be back. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the move has not been announced by the team.

Atlanta finished 48-34 - the same record as the Miami Heat, who lost 98-88 at the Boston Celtics but owned the tiebreaker over the Hawks and so earned the No. 3 seed. Because of Miami's loss, Atlanta would have moved up to No. 3 with a victory. Instead, the Hawks dropped their second game in a row and will face the No. 5 Celtics in the first round of the playoffs.

Washington finished 41-41 and 10th in the Eastern Conference, missing out on the playoffs after reaching the second round each of the previous two seasons.

Al Horford led the Hawks with 19 points. Ramon Sessions, one of four reserves who started for Washington, scored 22 points.

MAGIC 117, HORNETS 103

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Al Jefferson scored 26 points and playoff-bound Charlotte closed out its best regular season in 16 years with a victory over Orlando.

Evan Fournier and Aaron Gordon each had 22 points for the Magic.

PACERS 97, BUCKS 92

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Solomon Hill scored a season-high 25 points to help Indiana beat Milwaukee.

Lavoy Allen and Glenn Robinson III each added 14 points for Indiana, which clinched the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference on Tuesday night after beating the New York Knicks.

With the Pacers locked into a first-round playoff series against the Toronto Raptors, coach Frank Vogel sat starters, including Paul George and Monta Ellis.

Giannis Antetokounmpo led the Bucks with 19 points and nine rebounds.

BULLS 115, 76ERS 105

CHICAGO (AP) - Nikola Mirotic scored 32 points, Justin Holliday added a career-high 29, and Chicago closed a disappointing season with a victory over Philadelphia.

Mirotic hit seven 3-pointers. Holiday made five from long range, matching a personal best. Jimmy Butler added 10 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists.

The Bulls wiped out an early 24-point deficit and led by as much as 19.

That's little consolation for a team that expected to challenge Cleveland for supremacy in the Eastern Conference. Instead, they missed the playoffs for the first time since 2008 at 42-40.

Robert Covington led Philadelphia with 27 points. The 76ers finished an NBA-worst 10-72.
